The Hangtown Motocross Classic, a high-octane event steeped in history, continues to draw thousands of spectators and the elite of motocross racing to Rancho Cordova, California. This event, which started in 1969, was the brainchild of the Dirt Diggers North Motorcycle Club (DDNMC). Initially hosted in the rugged landscapes near Placerville—once known as Hangtown during the Gold Rush era—the race captured the spirit of adventure and competition inherent to the sport. In 1979, as the event grew in popularity, it found a permanent home at Prairie City OHV Park. Here, state-of-the-art facilities, including permanent sprinklers, robust fencing, and a modern announcing tower, have raised the bar for motocross events nationwide. Hangtown is not just a race; it's a spectacle of speed, skill, and dirt that has evolved into a beloved tradition.
